Insurance Appraisal and Umpire Services to Resolve Claim Disputes

Insurance appraisal is a binding alternative dispute resolution process that typically involves two independent appraisers who evaluate the claim, compare notes, and come to an agreement. When a disagreement arises between the property owner’s appraiser and the insurance company’s appraiser, an impartial umpire is suggested and agreed upon by both appraisers.

If the two appraisers reach an impasse, an impartial umpire is suggested and agreed upon by both appraisers. The umpire’s role is to decide between the two positions. An appraisal is considered complete when an appraisal agreement is signed by at least two parties: either the two appraisers or one appraiser and the umpire. In some cases, particularly in more complicated claims, an umpire may be appointed from the beginning of the process, or if the appraisers cannot reach agreement on an umpire, be appointed by the court.
